The General Director of National Defence Policy and International Relations (GENDPIR) of the Ministry of National Defence, Dr Konstantinos Balomenos, held on Wednesday 15 March 2023 a working meeting with the Ambassador of Lithuania to Greece Ms Lina Skerstonaite.
The main focus of the discussion was the strengthening of the bilateral defence relations between Greece and Lithuania and the examination of the security environment in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, as shaped by the latest geopolitical developments in the wider region.
The meeting confirmed, once again, the excellent bilateral level of Greek-Lithuanian cooperation in all areas.
In particular, Dr. Konstantinos Balomenos and Ambassador Ms Lina Skerstonaite had the opportunity to exchange views on:
• The impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Europe’s broader geopolitical environment.
• The security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and Türkiye’s revisionist policy in the wider Southeastern Mediterranean region.
• The management of the refugee crisis in Europe and the instrumentalisation of illegal migration by states such as Türkiye and Belarus.
• The common bilateral challenges and security threats the two countries face both as EU and NATO countries.
• The way to deepen the bilateral defence relations between the two countries, as well as to strengthen their cooperation within NATO and the EU.
Finally, it was emphasised that the strong diplomatic, economic and defence axis of Greece-Lithuania is a pillar of stability, security and peace for the wider region of Europe.
