International Conference on Crisis Managing “ATHENA ’21”, 07-09 December 2021

From 07 to 09 December 2021, the National Defence General Staff, under the auspices of the Ministry of National Defence, organises the International Crisis Managing Conference “ATHENA ’21” at the Auditorium of the Air Force Academy (SI), at the Dekelia Air Base.

This Conference on: “Threats and Challenges to the unstable Geopolitical Environment of the Eastern Mediterranean. Holistic Approach Strategies to address them”, will involve civilian and military personnel of senior and highest level, such as representatives of States, International Organisations, Institutes of International Relations and Strategic Studies, as well as stakeholders from relevant bodies in Greece (Ministries, General Staffs, Organisations, Universities, Institutes, etc.).

The purpose of the Conference is to analyse the modern challenges and threats to international security, focusing on the wider geopolitical environment of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as to present a holistic approach to addressing them.

More specifically, issues of particular interest will be developed, such as current geopolitical developments in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, energy competition, the role of FRONTEX in the EU, as well as the strategy of a holistic approach to address international challenges and threats. Finally, the conference’s sessions will include speeches on the role that Greece has to play in the wider environment of the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Conference’s programme was been drawn up by the General Directorate of National Defence Policy and International Relations of the Ministry of National Defence, which was responsible for the coordination and invitation of distinguished speakers. Keynote speakers of the Conference will be EU Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, the Chairman of the Hellenic Parliament Konstantinos Tasoulas and the US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt. Leading figures from the political, diplomatic, academic and business space, as well as senior members of the Armed Forces and the wider public sector from both Greece and abroad will also participate in the Conference as speakers.

The conference’s programme also includes cultural events (official dinner in the Hellenic Armed Forces Officers’ Club, visit and guided tour of the Acropolis Museum).
