On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a commemorative ceremony for the Naval Battle of Lepanto (1571), one of the most significant naval engagements in global history, was held in Corfu with resplendence and due solemnity.
The events culminated in the unveiling of a remembrance plaque in honour of those who fell at the Battle of Lepanto. This took place at the belfry of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (Annunziata), as part of a joint initiative co-organised by the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence and the Embassy of Spain.
The Hellenic Ministry of National Defence was represented by the Director General of the General Directorate of Defence Policy and International Relations, Ambassador a.h. Michel Spinellis, and the Embassy of Spain by the Ambassador of Spain to Greece, Mr Jorge Domecq. Among those attending were representatives from the state and local government, the Armed Forces and diplomatic missions.
During their addresses, the two Ambassadors highlighted the value of cooperation and collective action. These enduring principles that can turn challenges into pathways of optimism and enlightenment.
In conclusion, the roles of the two nations in maintaining stability in the Mediterranean and enhancing European security were underscored.Additionally, the connection between historical memory and both the present and future was stressed, emphasising that peace, solidarity, and liberty continue to constitute fundamental values for the contemporary world.
