The 2nd Information Seminar for the Ministry of National Defence entitled: “Applied and Holistic Management of Hybrid Threats and Crises”, organised by the General Directorate of National Defence Policy and International Relations of the Ministry of National Defence continues with particular interest.

The second cycle of this Seminar was completed on 21 May 2022, while the proceedings started on 19 May 2022. Deputy Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Chardalias gave a speech at the beginning of the second cycle stressing that the phenomenon of hybrid threats and crises is one of the most important challenges of the 21st century, which is why it attracts increasingly the interest and concern of the international community. No one can doubt that we live in an era where cosmogenic changes are taking place, with liquidity prevailing, stability being questioned, security and peace put at risk. At the end of his speech, Deputy Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Chardalias congratulated the Ministry’s General Directorate of National Defence Policy and International Relations, and in particular the General Director, Konstantinos Balomenos, as well as all those who worked and assisted in the excellent organisation of the seminar.

During the 2nd cycle, a hybrid threats/crises study was carried out and threats’ impact on the Digital Environment was studied. In particular, cybercrime issues were analysed, the space sector in terms of security and defence, the role of fibre and artificial intelligence, as well as the operations in cyberspace as a hybrid threat.

In addition, reference was made to tools and practices used by social media in hybrid operations, the role played by big data analytics, the value of modern 5G networks, while the developments in Earth’s observation from space applications and technology were of particular interest.

Considering that technology plays a key role in people’s daily lives and given the increasing trend of this phenomenon in the future, a holistic response to hybrid threats and crises requires an understanding of the impact of technology on the dimension of the digital environment, especially when used as a hybrid tool. The next cycle will take place between 26-28 May 2022, where themes will focus on the Cognitive Environment of hybrid warfare.
